Glaucoma Diagnosis & Co-management
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, often due to increased eye pressure. You can think of the optic nerve as the messenger between your eyes and brain. It transmits visual information from the retina to the brain so you can see and interpret the world around you. Glaucoma puts pressure on the optic nerve, causing damage over time. This damage can lead to vision loss or even blindness if not addressed promptly.
Glaucoma can often sneak up on you without any noticeable symptoms in the early stages, which is why it is called the “silent thief of sight.” A comprehensive eye exam is the best way and often the only way to detect this condition.
How we diagnose glaucoma
Catching glaucoma early is key to managing it effectively. When you come in for a comprehensive eye exam, Dr. Orgain will check your eye health and look for signs of glaucoma. This includes assessing your vision, measuring eye pressure, and examining your optic nerve. We will test your peripheral (or side) vision to see if there’s any vision loss, which is an early sign of glaucoma.
Glaucoma treatment in Fayetteville
Eye drops are usually the first line of treatment for glaucoma. They work by either decreasing the production of eye fluid or improving its drainage. Alternatively, Dr. Orgain may prescribe oral medications to reduce eye pressure. Laser therapy can also be an effective treatment for glaucoma, especially when eye drops and medications are ineffective. In some cases, patients with severe glaucoma may require surgery. Surgery can’t undo or cure vision loss caused by glaucoma, but it can keep it from worsening and causing further vision loss.
If surgery is recommended, we provide referrals to experienced glaucoma surgeons who specialize in the latest surgical techniques. After surgery, we continue to monitor your recovery closely. Regular follow-up visits are essential to ensure that your eye pressure is under control and that there are no complications.
